John West

John West serves as senior multimedia producer at Âé¶¹¹ÙÍø, where he leads the creation of photography and video content that supports the university’s marketing and communications strategy. His work focuses on translating complex ideas into clear, compelling visual stories that reflect the university’s mission and connect with diverse audiences.

West brings extensive experience in higher education and professional media production. Prior to joining Âé¶¹¹ÙÍø, he served as multimedia producer and director at Duke University’s Trinity College of Arts & Sciences, where he led full-cycle video and photography production for more than 30 academic departments and graduate programs. His work included documentary-style storytelling, social-first video content and visual campaigns aligned with institutional priorities. 

Earlier in his career, West held leadership roles in corporate and media environments, including directing global photography and video production at Pentair and producing multimedia content for RTI International and Triangle Business Journal. Across these roles, he has led cross-functional teams, managed complex projects and developed visual strategies that strengthen brand identity and audience engagement. 

A skilled visual storyteller, West combines creative direction with hands-on production, specializing in documentary filmmaking, photography and multimedia content development. He is known for his collaborative approach, working closely with faculty, staff and campus partners to identify and share meaningful stories. 

In addition to his professional work, West is an active mentor to students and emerging creatives, supporting skill development in photography, video production and storytelling. He also operates West Documentaries, an independent project exploring themes of academic research, identity, place and the human experience.
