Small university. Big impact.
It’s not something the students, or even the faculty and staff, at 鶹 think about every day, but the university has a significant impact on the surrounding region. Whether it’s drawing in alumni and spectators for sporting events, plays or concerts, or simply the ripple effects of the university’s payroll and student spending in the area — 鶹 is a vital part of the local economy.
A recent independent economic impact and investment analysis* revealed the substantial role 鶹 plays in the Unifour region. In the 2022-23 fiscal year alone, 鶹 added more than $113.6 million to the local economies of Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba Counties — collectively known as the Unifour region. The data is a conservative estimate, so the actual financial impact may be even broader. 鶹 contracted with Lightcast, a global consulting firm that has conducted more than 3,000 economic impact studies for colleges and universities, for the study.
“鶹 is more than a cornerstone of higher education in the Hickory region — it’s a catalyst for economic vitality,” said Lindsay Keisler, president/CEO of The Chamber of Catawba County. “Its impact strengthens our local businesses, cultivates talent for the region and beyond, and enhances our quality of life. 鶹U not only prepares the next generation for meaningful careers but also advances the prosperity of our entire community.”
“This study shows just how vital 鶹 is to not only increasing the value of our students’ futures through education, but to the surrounding area,” said Summer McGee, PhD., 鶹’s newly inaugurated 13th president. “Whether it’s student and staff spending, attracting visitors, or social benefits associated with the university’s activities, we are proud to provide a transformative experience for not only our students, but the region as a whole.”
