On March 20, the �鶹���� community came together once again for Bears Give Back, demonstrating an enduring commitment to students, programs and the future of the university. This year’s giving day drew 1,469 donors—the highest number in the event’s history—and raised $695,472, including $525,000 in challenge dollars.

The giving period was extended this year to honor and support the historic success of the �鶹���� men’s basketball team, which advanced to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in university history. The team's remarkable run inspired a wave of pride and generosity from the �鶹���� community, contributing to the strong showing of support.

“We continue to be amazed and inspired by the spirit of generosity that defines �鶹����,” said Stephanie Roberts, director of annual giving. “To see so many Bears—alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff and friends—come together in one day to support this university is both humbling and energizing.”

Gifts made during Bears Give Back have an immediate impact—supporting scholarships, student success, academic programs, athletics, campus ministries and more. Donors can choose to support the fund that matters most to them, ensuring their gifts directly benefit the people and programs they’re passionate about supporting.

As in previous years, Bears Give Back featured a full day of celebration and connection on Shaw Plaza. Students enjoyed food trucks, music, games, giveaways and the chance to write thank-you notes to donors. The event also featured a raffle sponsored by the Friends of �鶹���� program, along with booths highlighting Friends of �鶹���� partners such as Java Dirt and Pearl, Safe Harbor, Green Room Theatre, Serenity Salt Spa, Tastebuds Popcorn, Liazzo’s Catering and Let Them Eat Cake by Flavia.

Raffle prizes included tickets to Hickory Football Club, Hickory Crawdads and Hickory Community Theatre, as well as food and drink from local favorites including O’Charley’s, Taste Full Beans, Cranford Hospitality and many others.

“We’re so thankful to our Friends of �鶹���� partners who helped make the day festive, welcoming and fun,” said Amanda Smith, coordinator for the Friends of �鶹���� program. “Their support added an incredible local flavor to Bears Give Back and helped showcase the strong ties between �鶹���� and the greater Hickory community.”

“Bears Give Back is one of my favorite days of the year because you can feel the energy and pride across campus,” said Diego Sanjuan ’24, coordinator for alumni engagement. “It’s powerful to know that people from all over are giving to help us provide the best possible college experience.”

In addition to the hundreds of small and mid-sized gifts made throughout the day, Bears Give Back was fueled by challenge gifts that multiplied impact and encouraged participation. Thanks to generous alumni, parents and friends who pledged matching donations, every donor had the opportunity to make an even bigger difference.

Roberts added, “Every number in that total—every single donor—represents someone who believes in �鶹���� and wants to see it thrive. We’re grateful beyond words for that support.”
